Build positive health habits: Stay home when sick
If you have an appointment with Dr. Judith McCann and are feeling sick, stay at home instead. Rescheduling your appointment is helpful to reduce the spread of germs to other patients. This GIF shows how individual prevention type actions not only help you but can help the community at large. This is not new information. That being said, we can use the COVID-19 pandemic to reinforce these prevention strategies to build positive health habits.
Build positive health habits: Wash your hands
Many patients will notice the time I take between appointments to wash my hands. Because my job is hands on, washing my hands in between patients (as well as the chiropractic table) helps prevent the spread of germs. The following statistics are from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention: Show Me the Science – Why Wash Your Hands?
Teaching people about handwashing helps them and their communities stay healthy. Handwashing education in the community:
- Reduces the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 23-40%
- Reduces diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58%
- Reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21%
- Reduces absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29-57%
You can help reduce the spread of germs as well by building proper hand washing habits.
Build positive health habits: Don’t touch your face
While we try to clean public surfaces regularly, you are likely to pick up germs from public surfaces after washing your hands. Germs enter your body most easily through openings like the eyes, mouth, and nose. As humans we touch our faces a lot, but this is a habit we can work on breaking. Don’t forget to clean surfaces you touch a lot like your smartphone, steering wheel, and keys.
Don’t panic but be careful
These health habits help protect not only yourself, but also your loved ones and others.
